And there’s an election campaign…

This is shaping up to be a very interesting election. At this point I think the outcome is far from determined. A few random thoughts…

The specter of ISIS is, for the most part, a red herring that should not bear on your vote. Yes there is a threat of terrorism in the world. Yes we should stand against violent extremism. No this is not the issue which will affect you and Canada most significantly – try one of this list in its place: oil industry and global warming, First Nations inequality, housing bubble, low Canadian dollar, police powers, senate reform, or unemployment. Any of these are much more likely to impact your life, today, that ISIS or the threat of terrorism.

Stephen Harper is a very savvy politician. He is the reason why this election if far from over. It’s hard to stay in power for a long time. He understands that most of us vote with our hearts, not our minds, and he is very good at being on the correct side of emotional issues.

Justin Trudeau needs to take over the dialogue. He is attempting to make this election about policy but his pitch is much too complex. Make is simple – Progressive tax, free market, just society. A simple slogan that EVERY Liberal candidate hammers home every single appearance. Make the NDP and Conservatives challenge your core beliefs. Make the election about broad emotional issues, not small policy initiative.

Tom Mulcair may actually win. This is clear in the polls. What is interesting is that I was skeptical of his ability to retain the momentum started by Jack Layton. He has, even though he is very different that Layton. Jack was all about the high road and idealism. Tom is much more confrontational. It’s working.

Eleven weeks is a long time.

Fun election.
