Remembrance Day fake-sergeant and gay marriage.

From CBC news:

On Nov. 11, 2014, Gervais was seen live on CBC News with the Medal of Bravery, the Special Service Medal with one bar, the Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal, the NATO Medal for Kosovo and a Canadian Forces Decoration for 12 years of service.
Gervais, who is not a member of the Canadian Forces, pleaded guilty in March to charges of unlawful use of military uniforms and unlawful use of military decoration while dressed as a sergeant.
During sentencing Tuesday, he told the court he intended to pay homage to soldiers and veterans and didn't mean to offend anyone.

First, I don’t believe that he intended to pay homage to soldiers and veterans. I think it’s clear that he intended to bask in the accolades and respect of being one of those soldiers with chicanery. You don’t pay homage by impersonating and doing interviews. Simple. You just don’t. And, he knows that.

I am equally dismayed by the number of people who seem to state that Gervais’ impersonation is an insult to soldiers and veterans. It’s not. It’s a pitiful act of self-indulgence.  It is, in fact, a compliment to those soldiers and veterans that we hold them in regard because they are worthy of being impersonated. Gervais could relish in the attention he received because of the accomplishments of those men and women. He only impersonated them because they are people of high esteem.
Moreover, your accomplishments are yours. Gervais did not take anything from you. He did not diminish your stature. He did not misrepresent you. He misrepresented himself. He is a self-indulgent fool.

The sentence for Gervais was right. Slap his hand and move on. He learned his lesson.

What does this have to do with gay marriage?

I have never understood the argument that gay marriage is an attack on traditional marriage.

Um… why? Why do people think that someone else’s marriage affects their own union?

If your traditional marriage is not religious in nature (like my parents, for instance) then what does two men marrying each other have to do with your marriage? Yours is yours. It’s between you and your spouse and your friends and your family. Other traditional marriages in which an alcoholic husband beats his wife don’t seem to affect your marriage, why do two upstanding men who sleep together affect your marriage? It doesn’t. You just think it does because you are bigoted.

If your traditional marriage is religiously motivated then, again, what do two women marrying each other have to do with your marriage? Yours is yours. It’s between you and your spouse and your god. Your place in heaven will not be changed by Katherine marrying Valerie. You are welcome to think of homosexuality is a sin. That’s your right. But the argument that gay marriage is an affront to your marriage is without logical merit.
